Sue Wells – The New Canterbury Tales

Clearly, I’m sugar coating things.

A facebook message from a friend in the Uk – and my (slightly edited) response.

“Hi Sue,
I’ve been reading your blog, and talking to people about ChCh. What can be said? My Mom’s chimney fell down, and the windows all blew out, otherwise her place is standing. She was out at lunch, luckily, with friends whose house was not damaged much at all. No liquefaction, as the house is built on rock.

Anyway, today…….. I’m hitting you up to be my ID referee for my NZ passport renewal. My PP has expired, and I’m off to *** in 8 weeks. Oops. I thought I still had another year on it.
To do this, can you send me your:
NZ Passport number:
First and Middle name :
and contact daytime phone number:
and after hours phone numbers:
( country code/area code/phone number)
That’s all the info required.
You don’t need to sign anything,I just need to plug the info into a form, and then go hand it in at the NZ High Commission.
No I had better go, I have to paint the garden fence out at the house in ***. It is a rare sunny day. Spring has arrived.”

Any my response …

“It might take me some time. My house is f***d. My passport is somewhere in the middle of it. I will do my best to help. Don’t know that you can quite begin to contemplate what life is like here at the moment. Have you been bombed from below? That is what it is like. Sorry if I sound abrupt but please do feel free to come home, dig people out from acres of sand which is surrounding their houses, and help.”

Let’s get the messages clear. Please, can you help. Give us cash. We are open for business South Island wide, but we need every person with half a clue who loves this country to get their a into g, start raising cash for those who need it, start promoting that the rest of the island is open for business, and beyond that to grow a pair.

  3. Oh – and “bombed from below” – I hadn’t thought of it like that but it really is. Tonight I saw the 60 minutes earthquake feature. It showed a lot more damage than I had seen previously seen on TV – which has focused on the cathedral and the CTV and PGG buildings – I guess because of cordons. There are a lot more shattered buildings than I realised. The CBD really did look like it had been bombed.

  4. I have some wonderful non ChCh friends who are sharing our pain and doing what they can. Then I’ve come across a number of clueless non ChCh people who have gone to great lengths to elucidate to me how the ChCh earthquake is affecting them, and because I’m “Ok” (in their eyes) I’m to sit there and swallow their shit.

So yeah, come down and live it before you tell me how goddamn hard your life has been made by the earthquake. :/
